Joseph Andrews - oh dear

A potentially fascinating tale that doesn't really deliver the goods. I suspect the director has somehow missed nearly all the serious opportunities afforded by Fielding's novel and presented what is hardly more than a hastily-put-together pastiche. The really dark bits are given far from adequate expression and the funny bits are often just plain silly. The actors are good, especially Michael Hordern as Parson Adams. And the heroine's fresh innocence is heart-warming. So yes, I suspect that Fielding's novel was far, far better than the film That said, there are some genuinely good moments, there is some good acting, and one gets some idea of what society was like in Fielding's time. The costumes are good and the sets convincing. The ending .... hmmm....maybe I'm a bit slow but I could hardly follow how it came about. If all you want is some mild diversion, you might give this film a higher rating than I do.- Was this review helpful to you?
