Josie And The Pussycats
Josie (Rachel Leigh Cook), Melody (Tara Reid), and Val (Rosario Dawson) are the Pussycats, a struggling rock band hoping for success in the fast-paced music world. Their dreams seem to be coming true when a record producer (Alan Cumming) suddenly signs them up to become the newest number one band in the country, without even listening to their music. Before they can think twice, the girls are made over, given glamorous clothing, and besieged by hordes of trend-worshipping fans, but soon Josie and the gang begin to realize that their music is part of an evil scheme run by MegaRecords executive Fiona (Parker Posey) to control the world by planting subliminal messages in the music of prepackaged, manufactured pop groups. When the Pussycats learn the truth, Fiona will do anything to keep them from getting in the way of her ultimate plan. JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS roars into the new millennium with a dead-on satire of the modern culture of pop music and merchandising (including the fictional group Du Jour, an hilarious parody of boy bands). Simultaneously, JOSIE presents a trio of bubbly but tough female heroes who sound as good as they look, with songs produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. The film is a live action interpretation of the comic book from Archie Comics that became a popular animated television series in the 1980s.

From its opening lampoon of boy-band banality, this hilariously perceptive satire on crass commercialism and public susceptibility to hype seriously outclasses the comic strip and TV cartoon on which it's very loosely based. Gleefully ridiculing fashion fads, disposable culture and product placement, writer/directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan manage to denounce corporate greed without mocking the teenagers suckered in by pitiless exploitation. Pussycats Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson combine individuality with recognisable girlie traits. But the stars are Alan Cumming and Parker Posey, as record company executives seeking to sneak subliminal messages into the band's music.

Badly acted, bubblegum pop fodder that pretends to preach an anti-consumerist message while being blatantly, slickly commercial and overloaded with product placements.

Doesn't suck
This disappeared at the cinema- but actually it's not dreadful. There are some cringe-worthy bits in it. But there's some genuinely funny stuff in it too. I love a good conspiracy theory and the film uses a whole conspiracy plot to do with our consumption of pointless products (bounce tumble drier stuff anyone?). But it also has a massive amount of product placement. I know that's probably the joke- but it does seem too much. Try and guess who the members of the boy band(Dujour)are- all famous but uncredited.

American Pie star Tara Reid is set to star in a new romantic comedy entitled Honestly, about a private eye who falls in love with one of her subjects. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she is to take the lead role which will be directed by her brother Tommy.
