This is a retro DVD of Journey's 1981 Escape tour which was, if I remember rightly, the last year that Journey actually did a live concert on UK soil. Although its probably not common knowledge in the UK, Journey are one of the top 50 rock bands of all time and many would argue that they are the top rock band to see live. If you cant afford the 7 hour flight to see them in the USA, this DVD is a pretty good alternative. They were at the height of their fame on the 81 tour and, to date, this is the first official full concert video release from that tour. If you are unfamiliar with Journey, they are one of the most talented bands you will ever come across and its well worth taking the time to get familiar with their songs. There are some cracking tracks on here and if you like it there are many more to discover in the bands superb back catalogue which stretches right up to the excellent 2005 studio release Generations.
This captures Journey in their prime, playing all those songs from one of the best modern Rock albums ever,'ESCAPE'.
Steve Perry's voice is top drawer as you would expect, just listen to 'Open Arms'. Before Bon Jovi arrived, this was the Arena & Stadium band to watch.
Must see.
Considering the Recording date, sound and picture quality is reasonable .One of my all time favourite groups, with some of my all time favourite tracks ,
*Dont stop Believing* - *Lights* - Wheel in the Sky*. Real Rock music + incredible Vocals from Steve Perry and the Guitar sounds of Neal Schon.. Add the Magic of MTV + the Columbia music Corporation and you got a piece of history worth ruining your ears for .
Entertainment value *Good*. value for money*Yes*. O/A Opinion- Well Worth Renting.
Journey, one of the world's greatest exponents of melodic rock, a much maligned genre of music. If you are of a 'certain' age however, and remember the glory days of the late 70's and much of the early 80's, then this DVD is a must for you. OK, let's face it, none of these guys were ever gonna win the 'most glamorous rock star' awards, or for that matter enter into the annals of best dressed musician, but when it comes to writing some of the most memorable songs around they had few equals.
Take a trip back to the 80's, see the ridiculous spandex threads and cheesy open shirts and just ignore them all and concentrate on how this band manage to sound awesome without breaking a sweat. In Steve Perry they had perhaps one of the finest rock voices of his era, every note sung to perfection. The songs?, with the exception of a couple, after all this was a tour show to promote their latest album, all the classics are here, and they are performed with a polish that many of todays bands could only dream about. This has not aged well, the stage show was, to be honest, weak, even for the time it took place, but it was a fledgling MTV production so I would presume that the stage lighting had to be a little more simplistic due to the restrictions of the TV cameras. This withstanding, rent this if you want to hear some classic 80's rock music!
Been into this band for years and never seen this before. Quality is not brilliant but the singing and music is fantastic. One of the best vocals you will ever hear.
