    [Highly rated reviewer]

Quite a bright little film all told. Directed by John Boulting for the RAF Film Unit, it is considered as one of the major wartime, fact based productions. With a cast of British stalwarts, including the fresh faced Dickie Attenborough as the principle character, it tells the story of how various individuals each play an important part in heavy bomber crews. Starting from the initial attraction to the service and being a 'pilot' we see how differing talents lend themselves to other roles. The story in centrered on Attenborough and his failure at flight school but later success as a navigator. Minor dramas culminating in a ditching in the North Sea sustain the interest and make it as watchable as any other wartime effort. I was not previously aware of this film until its recent DVD release and look forward to more hidden gems from the IWM collection.
