Star Wars meets Ben-Hur in director Danny Cannon's imaginatively over-the-top science-fiction rendering of the celebrated 2000 AD comic-strip hero. In the future, the world has formed into densely populated Mega Cities with the Cursed Earth being the uninhabitable region lying between them. Law and order is maintained by a fleet of elite officers who are judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one, and Judge Dredd (Sylvester Stallone) is the most prolific of the brigade. This is how fans like their Stallone served up best — without subtlety, monosyllabic, biceps bulging and in constant action. Judge Dredd is easily the actor's best role since Rocky, and Cannon blends him into the futuristic frenzy with satisfying skill. Diane Lane as Judge Hershey, the romantic judge with a conscience, has some excellent moments, and Armand Assante puts in a fine performance of manic evil as a villain with a secret. Cannon continually accents the spark and humour of the comic, while ensuring the visuals are always spectacular and epic. Frequently stunning and always exciting, Judge Dredd is an under-rated fantasy gem, full of flash, plenty of bang and packing a considerable wallop.
John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's comic-book creation of a shoot-first-ask-questions-later cop who is also judge and jury finds the ideal actor in Sylvester Stallone, but the film strands him without a decent script in which he can flex his muscles.
The streets of Megacity 1 are filled with block wars and riots. The police act as judge and jury, and hand out sentences on the spot for illegal acts, even the death sentence.
Dredd is one of the finest Judges and is dedicated to upholding the law and serving justice at whatever the cost.
Dredd is wrongfully arrested for the murder of a reporter and sentenced to life imprisonment. The prison transport is attacked and he falls into the wrong hands, but somehow manages to escape. Dredd now has to try and clear his name, while an 'old friend' seeks his own retribution on the ex-judge.
Great special effects, stunning action scenes and superb plot makes this an all time great.
Court's adjourned
As you can probably tell by the review title, I wasn't expecting a lot from this movie. It's a comic book adaptation which is more often than not a bad sign, and the cast includes Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider.
I was, however, proved wrong. The two aforementioned characters putting in pretty good performances. Stallone actually uses a different facial expression at one point.
The highlight, however, has got to be the bad guy, Rico. Perfectly played and wholly despicable, this guy is one bad dude.
Don't be cautious like I was. Rent it and enjoy it.
Danny Cannon will be hoping to score a hit with his new film Goal! which opens at UK cinemas from today. Cannon's biggest projects as a director include I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and Judge Dredd. Now he has turned his attention to the world of football, and a film that has got everyone talking, not least due to the appearances of stars such as Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham and Alan Shearer. In terms of acting stars, the film's lead character Santiago is played by the relatively... Read more
