  • Dated but charming.....

This is another of those influential films you must see if you wish to keep your 'arthouse cred'. I watched the film having heard a lot about it but not really knowing anything about it at the same time. You are very aware while watching of just how influential this film has been, but what was avant guarde and daring when it was made now seems dated but very charming. Still at least I'm cool with the arthouse crowd.

A really charming film which held my attention throughout. Refreshing antidote to the majority of today's films which are full of bland stereotypes

  • Three's a crowd

The film takes place during and after the First World War, and explores the intertwined and complex lives of three people and their search for love, life and freedom. Jeanne Moreau is excellent as Catherine, the emotionally demanding and capricious lover of Jules and Jim.

Unfortunately him indoors fell asleep whilst it was on, and when he awoke complained that the characters were spoilt and self-indulgent and that he didn’t care about the agonies they had put themselves through. I think I felt the same, although found the film to be a brave one, worth watching for its very memorable ending.

Truffaut is very charismatic, and the DVD extra features him talking about this film and some of the experimental techniques used therein.

  • A Romantic Boil

    Rated - 2.5 stars
By Petergrafton (9 reviews) from Dawlish , 18 Jan 2012
The great Raoul Coutard shot this film and for first two thirds it cheerfully ambles along, and then gets very, very irritating. The relationship between the three is neurotic, not romantic. It needed Bunuel to lacerate this French romantic/ cod philosophical boil. Bunuel directed Moreau in Diary of a Chambermaid a couple of years later. A far better film. Apart from 400 Blows, Truffaut's films are disappointing. A shame, as Truffaut seemed like a very likeable person. You can see his grave in Monmatre Cemetary.

This film couldn't be more French if it tried!! I love the crazy characters, the beautiful scenery, camera shots and love triangle/crackpot plot. A timeless classic for the lovers of French cinema and unconventional love stories.

  • What's all the fuss about?

    Rated - 2.0 stars
By LeMec (4 reviews) from Glasgow , 28 Oct 2011
You can see how this film influenced a whole bunch of film-makers but I wasn't impressed at all. It was pretty boring and badly edited. There is nothing sympathetic or likeable about the characters and the plot and timeline seems to jump about all over the place, all the way to the abrupt end. A so-called classic that actually makes you wonder what all the fuss was about.
