Julia
By SAI81 (360 reviews) from Tonbridge , 15 Mar 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
Zonca's first film since The Dreamlife of Angels is a very different beast. Initially a character study of an alcoholic (Tilda Swinton as the titular Julia) it metamorphoses half an hour in, into a relentless kidnap thriller which veers from one desperate situation to the next at breakneck pace, without scarificing character detail. Swinton is absolutely extraordinary as Julia, making her totally convincing, even when her actions are hard to explain, there's a nervous energy about her performance too, which gives the whole film an edginess mirrored by Zonca's restless handheld camera.
The film is, at 150 minutes, perhaps longer than it needs to be, and the third act does get repetitious, but Swinton carries it through to its sudden, but satisfying, ending.- Was this review helpful to you?

By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 01 Apr 2013Underated very good thriller about alcoholic woman who gets involved in the seizure of a fellow alcoholics estranged son and ends up kidnapping the boy herself to try to get the ransom . A terrific plot as things spiral out of her control in Mexico.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent film
By Bungalow (10 reviews) from Petersfield , 23 Jan 2013[Highly rated reviewer]
There really is nothing like watching great acting even when the character is not epsecially likeable and Tilda Swinton is remarkable in this film. The story is a bit long and drawn out but there cannot ever have been a better depiction of an alcoholic out of control: Someone who takes so many wrong turns which you know that, but for her alcohlism, she would not be taking, How nice to see a film involving an alcoholic which is not an in yer face cliche of how destructive it is.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very nice
By margo_channing (12 reviews) , 21 Oct 2011This was great. Tilda Swinton has got to be the best modern actress at portraying the unlikeable woman, with the empathy just hinting through like light coming in a crack.
I loved the uncompromising treatment of the main character. She nails it. The thrill-seeking lush is spot on. It has some of the best scenes of nakedness I've seen in ages - seem so real and so not for camera they become quite voyeuristic making you feel uncomfortable for watching. Brilliantly done.
Visually there is a lot to take in. It is full of colour and texture.
I felt quite traumatised by the end. There was a scene or two towards the end where the flow seemed a bit odd and overly long. but I don't mind a bit of rough if it means people take risks. Really good movie. Great ballsy character.- Was this review helpful to you?

Underrated masterpiece.
By a customer from England , 07 Sep 2011Tilda Swinton stars as the eponymous anti-hero. She's an alcoholic who knows that her looks won't serve her in the long run, so latches on to a plot to take enough money to set herself up for life. But when things start to go wrong, to what lengths is she willing to go? With an impulsive main character put into increasingly trying circumstances, I was continually on the edge of my seat wondering what she would do next. There's a black comedy element to this since there are many points where you have to either laugh or cry at the messes Julia gets herself into. Some people weren't terribly happy with the ambiguous ending, but I liked it. And I'm really impressed that a movie this long managed to keep me interested for the start to finish.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tour de force for Tilda Swinton
By Jcamp (28 reviews) from Canterbury , 16 Jun 2011Tour de force for Tilda Swinton as the selfish, deluded drunk Julia. Her immoral actions have surprising consequences in this gritty drama.
It is too long and would have been improved by a more even pace. Nevertheless, I would recommend it for the acting and the unexpected conclusion.- Was this review helpful to you?
