Lillian Hellman's memoir Pentimento provides the basis for Fred Zinnemann's sensitive movie about friendship, courage and the playwright's growing awareness of the Nazi menace during the early 1930s. Lillian (Jane Fonda) finally makes contact with her childhood friend Julia (Vanessa Redgrave), a committed anti-fascist who has been injured in a demonstration. Later Lillian is persuaded to help smuggle money into Germany to aid in the fight against the Nazis. The film's strength lies not in complex plotting but in the excellent performances from Fonda, Oscar-winning Redgrave, and Jason Robards as author Dashiell Hammett. Meryl Streep makes her feature debut.

    Excellent, moving film

An excellent film, moving and well-acted. Fonda and Redgrave are particularly strong in their roles as a playwright and an anti-fascist activist who is struggling to make a difference in Austria and Germany before the second world war. It was nominated for all the main Oscars and deservedly won three in a tough year (against Annie Hall and Star Wars).
