Julian Donkey Boy is the film that cult Director Harmony Koraine made after the classic Gummo. Like Gummo, Koraine focuses on the freak and impoverished of white America. Instead of a rigid scrpit he lets his actors play out their parts ina sometimes non sensical way but always maintains itself as compelling veiwing and a great study of the warped human being. The 'hero' is a man with learning difficulties and you watch as he sings nursery rhymes while slapping himself in the face while being naked in the bath. You watch his dad drink alcohol from his slipper and his sister in a tutu dance around her room while her brother trains to wrestle by running up the stars and flopping his body back down. All the things you see don't seem to relate to any narrative or storyline but happen because they want to and can sometimes be unearving in the same way a David Lynch film can be.
Hollywood this is not, but if you are looking for a compelling piece of art, studying the strange underbelly of humanity, this surreal piece of work is for you.
