I was glued to this series when it was first shown. Good acting from well seasoned actors, plots were reasonable and inventive. Not as extreme as we have now and that for me is more realistic. It is only dated by the 70's look, the simple sets and occasional poor camerawork. Nostalgia is nice now and again.
A gentler police series than many, certainly an antidote to The Bill which always seems to involve the hardest side of police work.
Reminiscent in a way of Dixon of Dock Green
I saw this on TV when it was first shown and I enjoyed it again now ... can't wait for series 2 ... Insp Longton was just as good as Insp Darbly!
Hartley is a small Northern town not far from Denton, farther from Midsomer, but a million miles from the brutal, multiple and often bizarre murders which occur in those places. Uniformed Inspector Jean Darblay is in charge of the local nick and its small band of uniformed other ranks. During each 45 minute episode you feel you know the regular characters (Jean, her social worker husband and some of their respective colleagues) and it is no great struggle to get to know the few others that appear. Having enjoyed the 16 very varied stories in the four disks of the first series, I look forward to the next series and also, dare I mention, John Nettles in his earlier series - Bergerac.
A great series from the past, good story lines ,good acting, spot the star(youngsters who have made it) loved it.
Dissapointing. One of those shows I had fond memories of but has clearly dated & I could not believe just how bad the acting actually was. The title music still sounds great but leave it in the memory bank as one from the past!

The first series of This was filmed partly in the west Mids.
Although the film itself is dated somewhat, still enjoyable for me at least being able to look out for local shots
Cutting edge drama, thought provoking, a 'Rollercoaster' of excitement are all terms you could NEVER use when talking about this series. Not very convincing characters dodgy plots and some pretty average acting perhaps. But with the wealth of choice this club has to offer every night does not have to be Blockbuster night, try this for a bit of change, espicialy if you are old enough to remember it first time around, it will bring back some pleasant memories of how television used to be.
We used to watch this with our children on a Saturday evening so it was fascinating to see it again. It does look amazingly old-fashioned but the stories are well thought out & stand the test of time. In addition it provides some gentle nostalgia for us 'oldies' and excellent social history for the younger generation.
I remembered watching this as a kid, good trip down memory lane but looks very cheesy now
Good old fashioned cop show that doesn't have all the sex and violence of the modern cop show.

My personal Police series ever made, mainly because the situations feel real
