Junebug

A dealer in outsider art threatens the equilibrium of her middle-class in-laws in North Carolina. Madeline is a go-getting art gallery owner from Chicago, recently married to George, a near-perfect Southern beau. When Madeline needs to close a deal with a reclusive North Carolina artist, George introduces her to his family: prickly mother Peg, taciturn father Eugene, cranky brother Johnny, and Johnny's pregnant, childlike wife Ashley, who is awe-struck by her glamorous sister-in-law. Madeline's presence exposes the fragile family dynamics as hidden resentments and anxieties surface.

Alot more than just amy adams

This film is a wonderful rarity - a moving indie film about smalltown life that doesnt revolve around the destruction of harmony by an 'outsider'. The writing, directing and performances are so intelligently executed. It follows the story of a dealer in 'outsider' art going to meet her north carolina in-laws. her artistic background means that whilst being a city slicker, she is used to observing what she doesnt understand and instead of seeing the smalltown way of life as 'wrong' and city 'right' and the eventual corruption of smalltown life to city complexities as we would expect from such a film, the art dealer, madeleine invites us to stand by her as she absorbs the dynamics of the characters without trying to change their ways - without trying to alter the simultaneous pain and harmony that resides in each of them. brilliant film, brilliantly acted. amy adams deserved the oscar nomination and the film deserves similar acclaim for being brave enough to try and show the emotional complexities of a life that we see as out of fashion and backward in many ways.
