The word 'quirky' has become the quick and easy way to describe films such as Little Miss Sunshine and Lars and the Real Girl that straddle the lines between indie and studio films and comedy and drama. While Juno fits into that same category, this distinctive dramedy is in a class all its own. Ellen Page (Hard Candy) stars as .. Read more

    Life lesson

This is something guys should take there girlfriends to see. A chick flick I would say. Although there isn’t much to the whole thing and it didn’t make me laugh out, it still kept me watching without allowing me to dose of like most do. The only downside to me is that although it’s dealt with in calm, civilised manner the message sent out is that it’s ok to do this type of thing as if it’s the norm and someone will take care of it. The real world is totally opposite.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

If you agree, show your friend

If you can read this - Thank a teacher!

    Smart indie teen movie

A smart-mouthed flick with a lot of heart that wears it's indie roots on it's sleeve - almost a little too strongly in the first act, leading it dangerously close to being alienatingly emo with its ultra modern vocab, quirky soundtrack (translation - lots of songs you've never heard that all sound the same) and the 'it's every one else who's the outcast' attitude. But, it's witty dialogue, offbeat humour and strong performances all round soon win you over to produce a warmth and charm that never fails to raise a smile. It's a lighter look at teen pregnancy than it could have been, but this isn't really the place for melodrama anyway. Ellen Page carries the film, but is upstaged anytime her parents (JK Simmons and Alison Janney) appear.

Well worth your time - like Garden State without the melancholy.

    Paper Heart

    Michael Cera

    • 24 Jun 2009

“Meet Your Ancestors” says the poster to Year One over portraits of a hammily ironic Jack Black and a typically bewildered Michael Cera. Black is bearded and even hairier than usual. With his shoulder length blond wig Cera rather like Garth in Wayne’s World and decidedly feminine. The joke is on us, genetically speaking. You wouldn’t take either for the sharpest stick in the forest. A couple of years back your truly suggested that Jack Black embodied the average... Read more
