A tale of obsession

Set during the Sepoy uprising of 1857 in colonial India, this film tells a tale of love as obsession. A rich and indolent nawab, played by Shashi Kapoor, desperately wants to possess a young English girl, believing he is in love with her. However, his willingness to forsake nearly all in his quest to obtain her clashes with his duties to his country, which is in the throes of an aborted fight for its independence. A dark and beautifully woven film.
