It might just be me but I didn't pick up much on the ROMANTIC comedy angle from the trailer, but that's basically what Just Add Water truly is. It's also a nice little story of revenge and is an ideal movie for those suffering from troublesome neighbours. There are not many films that can make you want to urge the main character to 'Ask her out!'... 'Buy a gun!'.... 'Kiss her!' ..... 'Kick him in the face!' in fairly quick succession.
And what about Danny DeVito? I would usually want to throttle him so that I can't hear his demanding New York voice as he plays up any 'small guy' aspect of his role, and he nearly gets to the cliches here with his character's trophy pole dancing wife. However, looking at the credits reveals that she is played by Lucy DeVito, so I guess I can't comment. All in all his presence as both actor and narrator is not too nauseating for a change.
Jonah Hill proves that he can tone it down a little in this movie. I loved his work in Superbad, and I would certainly like to see him in more obvious comedy roles before age forces him into the ranks of either the serious or seriously broke, but he made the character of Eddie his own and truly manages to add a touch of poignancy to proceedings.
From a UK perspective I was amazed by the idea that a town can become such a true backwater, like the town of Trona in Just Add Water. Early on in the movie we're informed that the police have abandoned the place! I wonder how real this situation truly is because that would add a whole new element to the movie. If Trona-like towns really do exist in the US, then it's about time something was done. But there I go, taking things far too seriously again!
Rent and enjoy!
