This Roger Kumble romp is unfairly, indecently funny, with its committed cast and shrewd script raising the bar from Farellys to GROUNDHOG DAY sharpness.
Ten years ago, Chris Brander was the laughing stock of his high school: unfashionable, overweight and with an... read more on Time Out
After heading out to the cinema and then not knowing what to see as it was the last screening this was about it. Wasn't expecting a lot from this romcom but I did find it genuinely funny, laughing out loud several times throughout the film, it has some truely funny scenes. The plot, well it is not great, Fat-Kid becomes fit, goes home after 10 years and bumps into his best friend who he had a crush on and tries to win her heart, nothing new here but never the less for a movie you don't have to think to watch and that provides many laughs you can't go far wrong with this.
In high school, Ryan Reynolds loves Amy Smart but she considers him just a friend - hence the title. He's devastated and heads for the big city.
A decade later, and minus the latex prosthetics, he's become a hot shot record company exec and by a twist of fate finds himself back home with a psychotic rock chic in tow.
Given this second chance, can he change the nature of his relationship with his high school sweetheart and beat off the attentions of love rival, Chris Klein?
That's the basic plot, although the narrative itself meanders round all over the place, suggesting a script that needed more work.
This is a passable romcom but not much more than that. For me, the two leads are cute but bland, although the script is thin, leaving them little enough to work with.
The supporting cast is the best thing about the movie. Anna Faris is enjoyably over the top as the talentless, crazy pop star and the guy who plays Reynolds's younger brother milks a few laughs.
Overall, it's not that funny, but it's amiable and just about worth a look - just don't set your expectations too high.

Director Mendes, who also made American Beauty and Road To Perdition, is now turning his attentions to a musical version of Sweeney Todd. Second place in the chart compiled by Screen International is The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The... Read more
