At one time, Michael Biehn seemed destined to reach the higher echelons of Hollywood. With his breakthrough roles in The Terminator and Aliens, he offered a fresh variation on the rugged action hero: a more vulnerable, haunted figure, and sometimes, as in The Abyss, with a darker, psychotic side. However, since then, Biehn has never had the breaks he deserves, even though he remains as charismatic as ever, as this climbing epic demonstrates. Here he is perfectly cast as a brash lawyer who lives life on the edge through his passion for mountaineering. When wealthy Raymond J Barry plans an assault on the peak of the title, Biehn manages to get himself and his climbing buddy Matt Craven included in the party, against the wishes of Craven's wife. Although adapted from co-writer Patrick Meyers's own play, this is largely Boys' Own stuff, with character development taking second place to macho heroics and bonding; poor Patricia Charbonneau, the film's chief female lead, is largely sidelined. However, director Franc Roddam responds by staging one exhilarating cliffside set piece after another, including a breathtaking avalanche sequence. The Canadian mountains prove to be a more than adequate double for K2, the world's most lethal peak, and, despite the strong performances from the cast, the spectacular snow covered surroundings are the real stars of the show.

This movie is way better than other movies in its genre like vertical limit and cliffhanger. The acting is very good and the shots and effects very realistic. The suspense and adrenaline is high. The movie tells of two friends(One a shy, nerdy but good hearted man, the other being a playboy type egotistical man) who join an expedition to climb K2 the second highest and most dangerous mountain in the world. On the way the two friends learn a lot about each other and the 2 characters are well developed as are the rest of the team. The expedition soon becomes a battle for survival as things take a turn for the worst. This is the sort of movie where you know whats going to happen but seeing it gives you a thrill. Definetly worth checking out
Meet lawyer Taylor Brooks (Michael Biehn.) Arrogant, snazzy and a big shot on the scene. Meet his scientist pal Harold (or H) Jameson (Matt Craven) a more reserved, practical type guy. Two guys with seemingly little in common but one shared passion- mountain climbing. But they're two guys with their eyes on the big kahuna- K2, in Northern Pakistan, the seemingly unclimbable mountain. Taylor and H set out to do the impossible.
K2 plays out as a simple, straight-forward mountain climbing thriller and on that level it works. Boasting some wonderful cinematography of the mountain ranges and some quite unnerving cliff top views, it feels like it's plodding along a bit sometimes. The enormity of the achievement is somewhat played down and it does feel they've turned climbing the world's 2nd highest mountain look like a real tough day hike. Cast is okay, soap opera dialogue and plot-by-the-numbers is bearable, sometimes the scenery is outstanding.
Maybe worth a rent IF you like this sort of thing. Not the best in its class.
