Director Yash Chopra is famed for introducing the psychopathic hero into Indian cinema in Darr (1993). Here, however, he is on more traditional ground with a masala melodrama about arranged marriage set among the privileged classes. While the film spawned a handful of popular songs, it is essentially a soap opera with a more than usually contrived plot and only a superficial discussion of its social and cultural themes. Amitabh Bachchan takes top billing, only to be upstaged by co-star Shashi Kapoor, who will be familiar from such collaborations with Merchant/Ivory as Heat and Dust.

    run of the mill

The film was daringly different for its times. But its stale fare when viewed in the context of Yash CHopra films.

To cast Amitabh, the new action hero in a spineless character and pair him opposite Waheeda Rehman takes guts.

Shashi Kapoor is bubbly. Raakhee must have been in her best, appearance wise. Rishi and Neetu pair is pleasant, young and lovable.

Kabhi Kabhi song is the highlight of the film. Its a classic.

The films story falters and stagnates after the initial one hour.
