Director Yash Chopra is famed for introducing the psychopathic hero into Indian cinema in Darr (1993). Here, however, he is on more traditional ground with a masala melodrama about arranged marriage set among the privileged classes. While the film spawned a handful of popular songs, it is essentially a soap opera with a more than usually contrived plot and only a superficial discussion of its social and cultural themes. Amitabh Bachchan takes top billing, only to be upstaged by co-star Shashi Kapoor, who will be familiar from such collaborations with Merchant/Ivory as Heat and Dust.
The film was daringly different for its times. But its stale fare when viewed in the context of Yash CHopra films.
To cast Amitabh, the new action hero in a spineless character and pair him opposite Waheeda Rehman takes guts.
Shashi Kapoor is bubbly. Raakhee must have been in her best, appearance wise. Rishi and Neetu pair is pleasant, young and lovable.
Kabhi Kabhi song is the highlight of the film. Its a classic.
The films story falters and stagnates after the initial one hour.
Its a nice romantic movie. Its hard to digest why didn't Rakhi and Amitabh approached their parents even once to let them know about their love. If they loved each other, at least they should have the courage to speak to their parents before sacrificing their love for the sake of their parent's happiness. Thats the reason I am not giving it 5 stars. Otherwise nicely directed and acted movie with evergreen songs.
A bit too over the top for me with all the poetry quotations but I still enjoyed it.

Beautiful songs.
The title song Kabhi Kabhie is probably the most romantic song that a Bollywood songwriter has ever written.
It remains a classic

If you are a fan of Asian cinema or not this is a classic. One to definitely watch.
One of the best of Yash Chopara movies. 4 stars because sometimes you feel that he is dragging the movie.
An intelligent script with plenty of emotion. There is very little you can comment further to the title song which cuts to the heart each time its heard. Definitely stored under the classic section!
This film is brilliant, unlike many asian films this feels more realistic, especially given the era it was made in. The title song has to be one of the best if not the best song ever written and the poetry in the film is all of a very high standard. Watch this film if you like romantic indian cinema!

well worth a watch if u love bollywood and u love its music
