Barely released in this country, Steven Soderbergh's follow-up to sex, lies, and videotape is a far cry from that auspicious debut. Yet, with its stylish references to German Expressionism and the great Universal horror films of the 1930s, this fantasy on the life of the Czech insurance-clerk-turned-novelist is possibly even bolder and more imaginative. Jeremy Irons might not be everyone's first choice for the title role, but he acquits himself admirably in what is essentially a loose reworking of The Third Man. Alec Guinness and Ian Holm stand out in a splendid supporting cast, but the true stars are cinematographer Walt Lloyd and Gavin Bocquet's art department.

An intriguing attempt to create a paranoid fiction combining elements of Kafka's life and his stories; it is stylish though not entirely successful, closer to the basics of a horror movie than to its author's works.

    surreal and claustrophobic mystery

Bureaucracy and intrigue swallow up a hapless franz kafka (Irons) as his seemingly inconspicuous co-workers become more and more suspicious. disappearances, lunatics, doctors and lobotomies ensue in this thriller where you never quite know what our unwitting protagonist is about to stumble into, and where no one can be trusted. a travesty that this hasn't been released yet.
