This is a poor quality DVD: the running time is a truncated 2.16hrs, and while none of the songs is missing, there are many abrupt transitions and obvious gaps elsewhere in the story. The plot is contrived, and the lead performances (from Dev Anand and Madhubala) affected and unconvincing. On the plus side, Nalini Jaywant (playing a courtesan) delivers a genuinely touching performance, and there are several good songs - unfortunately not subtitled - from the always reliable SD Burman (singers Rafi and Asha). The picturisation of the final song Dilwale ab teri gali tak is worth noting: it is the only example I know of in which Madhubala (impersonating a gypsy) sportingly wears dark make-up. And what a difference that makes to her appearance - with a dark complexion, she looks mediocre, rather than her usual radiantly beautiful self.- Was this review helpful to you?
