The X Files star David Duchovny plays a writer researching serial killers for a book who gets rather too close to his subject in this so-so psycho teen road movie. A slow start builds to an explosive climax after Duchovny and his photographer girlfriend (Michelle Forbes) unwittingly pick up two likely suspects as they travel from Kentucky to California. Brad Pitt does his mentally unbalanced act rather well, and Juliette Lewis is also good value as his trailer-trash, childlike sweetheart. Sadly, director Dominic Sena fails to develop an interesting scenario into anything other than empty attitude and annoying posturing. It's True Romance without Quentin Tarantino's laughs or quirkiness, and Natural Born Killers without Oliver Stone's subversive genius.

It is not what I expected. It is a very basic film. But Brad Pitt's performance was good.

    So So

Did not really think much of this film. Suppose it was a novel story but there was no real thought provoking or captivating story to get into. Bit disapointing, never thought I would have said that about Mr Pitt!

    A sub-classic all the way

I guess the main talking point is going to be about Brad, so here's my bit - in this film he seems driven to portray the opposite of everything he is in real life - nasty, vile, awful etc, but at the same time, shows that piece of him that everyone wants to be - utterly self-confident and able to do the things others wish they could do (very much like in Fight Club).

He is perfect for this film, and is genuinely unpredictable and scary. Matched with Juliette Lewis, they are the ideal trailer trash couple, and you end up feeling very sorry for JL's character. In some respects they take away from the other performances, but the whole film feels right - a modern thriller in structure and a decent look at two completely different cultures coming together - especially as they're both white american cultures.

    Cult Classic

This movie was not as good as I remmember and I hate Duchovny but as a whole it is still a classic. I thought the underlined story was pretty good as Pitt gives a great performance as a serial killer who is a pretty good guy really. If you aint seen it rent it you will more than like;y enjoy it.

Strange coincidence that a writer about serial murders ends up travelling across the US with - guess what . . . .? This point aside Brad Pitt was excellent as the scary but at times pathetic and almost likeable bad guy and Juliette Lewis was outstanding as his outwardly naive and loyal-to-the-death girlfirend. You really could empathise with all four characters in a strange way - this film will keep your attention until the end - put it on your list now!

    Cheap kicks

Something of a cheap offering, Kalifornia is useful as a reference point for the developing career of its leading actor, Brad Pitt. Whilst his role as serial killer Early becomes progressively sillier as the film reaches its climax, the character's violent development helps understand Pitt's later choices of roles in Se7en and Fight Club.

Certainly, Kalifornia is part of Pitt's canon before he found using his notable appearance to more glamourous effect in his most recent films, from The Mexican onwards.

    strange

good but very strange, liked it 10 years ago but just found it sick this time round. it is worth a watch but brad very weird and scummy in this one although he meant to be.

watch it but don't don't expect good guy v serial killer it very different to run of mill movies.

    Kalifornia

Emotionally effective and visually interesting, Kalifornia is both dramatic road movie and serial killer character study. Duchovny and Forbes are an engaging and appealing on screen couple, Juliette Lewis plays the abused girlfriend with childlike innocence to perfection but it's Pitt's powerful and quirky portrayal of a redneck killer, which entices throughout and supplies the film with its energy and tension. Not outstanding, but a sturdy thriller.
