This film is about a guy who has lost his daughter at a bus station in America and his battle to cope with his loss. This movie started very well and although it held my attention until the end it did go downhill in the middle. Damien Lewis is a good actor and his acting in this movie was very good, but when the lady and her daughter comes into the film part well through, that is where the story starts to fail. I would have prefered it if Damien Lewis character had been the only character in this entire movie. To be honest, the introduction of the lady and daughter wasn't necessary to the story and didn't deliver anything new and ended a bit worse for wear. It was like the writer had written a really good start, but didn't know how to end it. 2 stars for a good performance from Mr. Lewis.- Was this review helpful to you?

By ghedgehog (26 reviews) from Milton Keynes , 24 Feb 2013This is every parent's nightmare, to lose a child, and I can relate to the reaction of Damien Lewis's character entirely. But I can't understand the reviewer who wanted the film to have portrayed William Keane alone. The introduction of the mother and daughter saved the film for me when it was beginning to become unwatchable. Unless you are actually studying the effects of mental illness, it's asking a lot of the viewer to sit through. Great acting though, for sure, and I think I can just about recommend it, as long as you're not expecting mainstream cinema.- Was this review helpful to you?

An interesting and sympathetic look at mental illness.

Just because a film is 'sad' in nature does not mean it is not worth viewing time! It's a very original look at a man's descent into madness and his search for redemption. As one would maybe expect from Damian Lewis, the lead was played well, and the story was a well told and symapethic look at the issues concerned. .- Was this review helpful to you?

Not entertainment

After watching Damian Lewis in Homeland, I was interested to see him in something else. I chose this film.
There was no sickly sweet story, no background information or prelude. You are thrown into his world completely from the beginning. A kind and likeable character, but with a darker side involving sex and drugs. You want the film to end on a happy note, but sadly, you are left wondering. You can make up your own ending.
Definitely worth a watch. The reviewers who did not like this film were obviously expecting a typical American gore-fest or a sickly love story. This was gritty acting at it's very best AND from a British actor!

Why did I bother?

It starts with the premise of a father looking for his abducted/lost daughter but apart from setting the scene for his paranoia and drug abuse that scenario serves little towards moving the story on. It dissolves into the story of two dysfunctional adults and an innocent little girl played stunningly by Abigail Breslin, (ah yes, that’s why I watched the film in the first place.)
Real life doesn’t necessarily have a start, a middle and a happy ending and there is no reason why a film should have them, unless, of course, you are watching it to be entertained. I watched the film to the end waiting to be ‘entertained’ in the broadest sense; it never happened.
It is well acted, especially by Abigail B. But the actors are struggling against a story that goes nowhere. The stark reality of the shooting is a plus but starting from a zero that hardly helps. It is a shame the resources, skill and expertise involved in the film’s production didn’t have a better vehicle to work with.
