Delightful, beautiful, charming and yet disturbing.By Mr B. from Bristol England , 05 Dec 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]This is one of those lovely British films that evoke the best of Ealing type comedies. A gentle comedy about a vicar, his wife, his daughter, his son and their lovely sweet charming life in a delightful country village. That's what it feels like, except the daughter is a nymphomaniac, the wife is trying to have an affair and the vicar is played by Rowan Atkinson...so it's a wacky comedy then, except it isn't. Due to a wonderful restrained performance by Atkinson and a beautifully authentic performance by Kirsten Scot-Thomas, the film remains 'real'. Then enters Maggie Smith a a Mary Poppins type, who is wonderful, as is Maggie Smith..she has one little character flaw though, she 's a mass murderer...This is a lovely film , with superb performances a witty script, but somehow it's amorality leaves one a disturbing taste.

Silly but sinister comedyBy filmbuffkate (82 reviews) from Cornwall , 15 Jan 2007Quite amusing story although missing it at some points, I loved the idea of the story and Dame Maggie doing something like this. The boundaries did blur now and again from comedy to seriously sinister. I felt the underlying story was a little predictable too. Some fantastic comedy though, a good laugh.
Suprisingly funnyBy a customer from Aberdeen, Scotland , 15 Jan 2007I rented this movie purely because Maggie Smith was in it - but I enjoyed this movie more than I expected. Dame Maggie Smith is of course brilliant, and the rest of the cast make this a really enjoyable story and film with moments of serious belly-laughs. Don't write this off because of the potential cheese factor. Will leave you in a better mood.
Keeping MumBy a customer from Horley, Surrey , 14 Jan 2007Did'nt really know what to expect, being a British film plus with Rowan Atkinson starring, it could've gone either way! It turned out to be funny, light-hearted and very entertaining.
Would recommend it!
