i was expecting an utter classic. i knew it would be slow, grey and 'naturalistic' in the ken loach sense - i loved 'the wind that shakes the barley' - but it was just too slow, grey and naturalistic. and it has dated badly. there are very funny bits (megalomaniac PE teacher) but i dunno, the whole thing just reminded me of a holey, brown sock that has been discarded for nearly forty years.

  • A bleak film

    Rated - 3.0 stars

This is a hard film to watch. I did so a number of months ago but it's bleak setting and uncomfortable family relationships are hard to forget. There are glimmers of hope in the relationship of the boy with his bird of prey but this is not one to watch if you need cheering up.

Bleak, poverty flick about North of England boy headed for a future down t'pit, until saved by his love of a kestrel. He builds skillful rapport with the bird, which offers to lift him out of his dire circumstance.

Whish I could review this film but its yet another Love Film DVD which arrived damaged and unwatchable - this is happening on a regular basis and all Love Film do is send you a stock email which must be sent out on a regular basis nowadays. Shame.

  • A Classic for it's Age

    Rated - 3.5 stars
    By a customer , 05 Jun 2012
I've been looking forward to seeing this movie for some time as I've heard good reviews about it. I was not disappointed and thought it really worth watching.

'Kes' is a real classic for it's age and I think this fact must be taken into consideration when viewing. At the time of filming in 1969, Ken Loach, the director, could not have had all the visual effect tools at his disposal as a director of his caliber would have been able to call upon today. Reflecting upon this fact, I think the film was well made and held it's own with the storyline which was very realistic for the day. The acting was good and a special mention should be given to David Bradley in the part of Billy Casper.

Do I have any criticisms ... yes, but only one, 'Kes' had rather a strange ending ... a bit abrupt for my liking.

I watched it a few weeks ago, but unfortunately I have no memory of it. I remember a boy and a bird, and the bird is with the boy and the boy is with the bird. Ooops i think i spoiled it now........might have been good though, but i don't remember....
