Kick-Ass

I was not expecting such a high body count. I was not expecting to enjoy a film with Nicholas Cage. I was, however, hoping to enjoy a film that has an 11 year old girl uttering the 'C Word'.

The violence is very well choreographed and there are some neat touches that give nods to the film's comic roots. I look forward to the forthcoming sequel but one thing...please kill off Red Mist early doors. I find him creepy and utterly pointless.

I wanted a touch more comedy in the film but this is a small complaint. I am now to hunt down a copy of the comic.

One thing though, my disc looked like it had been used on an orbital sander. This reduced my enjoyment as I had to skip chapters then rewind to the point just after where it had stuck.

Very funny, although some might find the high body count slightly disturbing- especially as most are inflicted by an 11 year-old girl!

High School nerd, life pretty ordinary, wants to become a Superhero, has altercation, has reconstructive surgery, foils attack, becomes a hero, gang boss wants him dead. Extremely enjoyable action/comedy which doesn’t take itself too seriously and mixes witty dialogue with some over-the-top gore and smart fight choreography. A really good bit of casting too with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead, Mark Strong hamming it up as the gangster boss and Nicholas Cage in one of the best roles I’ve seen him in for a while. As usual with Matthew Vaughn it’s brilliantly shot and comes with a fantastic soundtrack with the use of Elvis’ American Trilogy a real highlight.

New take on the superhero genre in this super black comedy. Full of action, wit and humour amidst 'Oh my god' moments that are truly shocking. Hit Girl steals the show with a stellar performance, full of depth and hidden meanings. Recommend!!

K-A the comic was created by a Scottish guy who, as a teenager, wanted to dress up as a super hero with his mate. The trouble is, he lived in a small Scottish town with virtually no crime! Instead he created the comic which turned into a screen play by Jane Goldman (the wife of Jonathon Ross, who is a massive comic book fan). Essentially, this is the story of a teenage kid who buys a super hero suit and becomes K-A at night, fighting crime and saving cats from high ledges at night. His antics soon get the attention of real life super heros Big Daddy and Hit Girl, a father-daughter crime-fighting duo who are waging war against a local mafia boss for very personal reasons. The super hero scene gets a little more crowded when the mafia bosses son becomes super hero Red Mist in order to lure K-A, Big Daddy and Hit Girl into a trap and into the clutches of the mafia boss (they have been fighting crime a little too well and encroaching on his drug business). Some people might think there is too much Tarantino style violence in this film but I think it adds a little bit more to the film, crossing it over to the adult audience it is really intended for (you wouldn’t want your 6 year old to watch a film with this much blood splatter and references to drug dealing anyway). *I have entered K-A instead of the superhero name in the title of the film as every time I do, the software on this website comes up with an error message that says ‘Your review appears to contain an obscene word’!! Brilliant.
