Kiddy Grade is, on the strength of these first three episodes, an enjoyable, fluffy sci-fi adventure busy with action, gadgetry, peril and gratuitous shots of the heroine's underwear - all standard for an anime TV series. The characters are fun (particularly exuberant action-girl Eclair) and the hints of a darker backstory no doubt to be developed in future episodes.
The English dub leaves something to be desired, and the decision to translate the songs into English has thankfully been confined to only a few anime releases, of which this is unfortunately one. Also, a measly three episodes seems too few for the opening disc of a 26-episode TV series. But if you want to indulge in some no-brainer sci-fi hijinks (and don't mind some suggestive content - I wouldn't recommend this for the under-13 audience), I can certainly recommend Kiddy Grade.
Kiddy Grade is an anime that will probably get lumped in with the rest. In a way, it deserves to. It offers very little that hasn't been seen before, and this first volume really bored me. Nothing happened, no character development, they just did a different mission every episode (as far as I can remember anyway, I wasn't paying much attention).
I was attracted to Kiddy Grade by the lovely character design and beauty of the animation, and yes, it's one of the prettiest anime I've ever seen and has some really imaginative character designs. But that doesn't disguise the fact that it's really just another of those typical action anime below the art, with a couple of fanservice panty shots and very little to the plot so far. I like something deeper to my anime, something mysterious from the very beginning, and maybe this might pick up in later volumes but I'm not sticking around to find out.
Might be to some people's taste, I've never really been one for this kind of genre, so perhaps my opinion isn't relevant to you. But I still think that there are far better anime out there.
