Those dim remembered hills

There are several versions of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, none of them entirely satisfactory. As a London based Scot my glasses are a little rosy and I rather enjoyed this yarn. The direction is a bit plodding and Michael Caine’s David Breck seems to based, rather unfortunately, on Errol Flynn with a costume to match. If the principal acting is not the tops (with the exception of the lovely Vivien Heilbron) we do get to see some decent character acting in the smaller roles. The use of Scottish locations made me homesick for the hills although it has to be said that a lot of the colour has been bleached out of the 1970 photography. A minor film, then, but not without an element of Scottish charm. Well, I quite liked it anyway.
