This early Miyazaki work is a delightful, meandering story of a young
witch Kiki making her mark on a provincial seaside town, with her cat
Gigi, long before Harry Potter was ever heard of. There are lessons
along the way, as enthusiastic Gigi makes friends and becomes an
unlikely heroine.
Miyazaki's meticulous and breathtaking evocation of place gives us this
time a Japanese take on a French town, in a world where witches fly from
place to place on broomsticks. The art work is superb and haunting.
As always the English language version can grate if you are not
American - Gigi the cat has been given a particularly irritating voice,
which makes you think of Sabrina the teenage witch. But you can readily
forgive this film..
If you're ill in bed, or just tired and low, put this on to remind you
that life can be sweet, too. Kids and adults will love it.
Great film, not a patch on Spirited Away, but consider its age.
What spoiled it for me was that the subtitles are 'for the hearing impaired' which means you get all the 'sound of birds chirping' etc.
After watcing it in Japanese I had a look at the dubbed version, it's unbelievable how much has been added by the translators, un-necessary lines that ruin the film for me. There is no need to add lines to a completed film. Totally pointless.
Good animation, doesn't look at all as dated as I thought it would.
Worth watching, but make sure you watch the original Japanese version!
