Given the buzz that has built up around this film following its première at FrightFest 2011, I've been looking forward to seeing what the fuss was about. The plot sounded promising and by all accounts it was a dark, disturbing, uncomfortable film with superb acting.

Well, I can't argue with the last bit - all of the performances were fantastic, but particularly the three central characters, whom I liked very much. The premise is interesting as well, and the film started out promisingly. I enjoyed the very appropriate black humour and the uncomfortable relationships.

However, as the film got further into the action, the plot seemed to start slowing down, and ended up going in a direction that I didn't find interesting at all. It was difficult at times to tell what was going on and what some of the characters' motivations were. When the ending came along, it was fairly compelling, but I'd lost much of my initial interest by then.

On a more neutral and subjective note, some of the violence was indeed difficult to watch, and overall there was a low-budget 'feel' to the film - both of which are a matter of taste. That sums up my overall attitude towards the film, in fact: not a bad piece of entertainment, but not really my thing. I may be more disposed towards it if I were to see it a second time.

did they really think the ending was going to be a good idea? for the first hour or so, i thought this was a cool indie flick with an interesting twist at the horizon. and then what happened? i was so utterly disappointed beyond anything imaginable! the ending was such rubbish and plain stupid. it made no sense whatsoever. it is so ridiculous it actually made me angry. how stupid can anyone be and actually think this film is a good idea? it totally beats me. stay away from this huge pile of stinking rubbish.

  • Fight a hunchback and win a hat!?!??!!

This film has such an edge for the first hour, leading you to feel like there's depth and an awesome ending around the corner.

The direction and editing accumulate a growing sense of unease, simulating the main character's mental state. I was truly surprised and gripped.

And then the ending transpired and I wanted to slap the filmmakers.

The final sequence is unintentionally hysterically funny, ridiculous and an insult to the viewer. It truly is best summed up by the quote from the commentary; it really is just 'a film in which a bad man wins a hat'.

Overall a good film. Original idea with some fantastic acting and dark cinematogphry. This will not be everybodies cup of tea, for sure. For a start it's gruesome at times, with some uncomfortable moments. Both of which I like. My big bugbear with film is the message gets lost a bit at the end, perhaps they'd rushed to finish; whatever the reason I wasn't keen on ze finale. Definitely worth a watch and another good domestic film churned out by Film 4.

well that's an hour and a half I'll never get back!! good if you're a fan of graphic violence or sheffield scenery. otherwise the plot is predictable. the acting mediocre, and an ending you could have seen coming a mile off.
