KILLER'S KISS, Stanley Kubrick's second feature-length film (though barely more than an hour), tells the story of a down-and-out boxer who falls for a comely female neighbor, leading to kidnapping and murder. Davey Gordon (Jamie Smith) has seemingly fought his last fight after being pummeled by Kid Rodriguez in the first round. Gloria Price (Irene Kane) is the hard-luck dame whose window faces Davey's. A dancer at Pleasureland, Gloria is trying to break up with her boss, Vincent Rapallo (Frank Silvera), but he would rather see her dead before allowing her to be with another man. So when Davey and Gloria start a steamy romance, it isn't long before murder enters the picture.
Somewhat similar to his 1951 boxing documentary, DAY OF THE FIGHT, Kubrick's gritty black-and-white film noir, told in flashbacks, was shot on location in the streets of New York, effectively capturing the dark underbelly of the city at night. The camera rarely rises above Kubrick's waist, and the low-angle and ground shots give the film a menacing look. Kubrick believed that a film, like a symphony, must be created by a single individual, so he served as writer, director, editor, and producer on the project. The result is a small picture that provides a fascinating look into the early work of a man who would soon become one of the world's most important and influential filmmakers.

With films such as Dr Strangelove, 2001 and A Clockwork Orange, Stanley Kubrick became one of the world's most famous directors and lived a reclusive, intensely private life in a stately home near St Albans in Hertfordshire. But Kubrick began with low-budget thrillers and this boxing-gangland story (his second film) has that streak of fatalism and cynicism that marks his later work. There is a terrific climax when hero and villain have a fight surrounded by mannequins, and an entirely spurious ballet sequence featuring Kubrick's second wife Ruth Sobotka. It's a fascinating work, even though it's weakly acted and rough at the edges.
Written, edited, shot, produced and directed by Kubrick for a mere $75,000, his second feature is a moody but rather... read more on Time Out
Before Stanley Kubrick was a world famous auteur, he was a normal filmmaker creating low budget genre films. In this case Killers Kiss, a thriller that adheres to film noir conventions such as, stark black and white photography, a dangerous female companion and a cynical narrator. However, as this is a Kubrick film nothing is too conventional and his early talent can be seen shinning through. Its just unfortunate that the script and characterisation isnt as good as the photography and direction. Probably a film for the Kubrick completists and not essential viewing, unlike his other early work, The Killing and Paths of Glory.
A slow starting short film (60 odd minutes) which at times looks as though directed by a film student - which one could suppose Kubrick was at the time, However, it picks up pace halfway through and the plot pulls you in to crescendo in a fantastic fight scene at the end, involving dummies limbs and axes and two very knackered combatants. Great start to a film making career.
