I didn't enjoy this....but you might.By a customer , 07 Nov 2012
[Highly rated reviewer]I would never say don't rent a movie, just because I disliked it. And as far as I am concerned this movie is well acted and suspenseful in places. However I didn't enjoy this movie at all. Its a grim tale which is expected, but it also has a slow pace and because none of the characters are 'good guys' they are also not very interesting other than Killer Joe.
The violence is very realistic and sickening in places. I thought the ending was slightly over the top in a shock value way, and made me wonder if characters would really act like this (in the final scene). If you like gritty films which are unforgiving and bleak you may enjoy this. I wouldn't compare this to many films, perhaps No Country for Old Men, but it doesn't come close to that movies richness.

Worth watching but some flawsBy Staggerlee (8 reviews) , 06 Sep 2013Firstly, a good film to watch. Different and beautifully acted. The story is interesting and full of twists. However, it is quite talky film with not much action and there is one very wierd sex scene - fellatio on a kfc chicken leg which seemed to be put in just to make the film wierd. Reminded me of blue velvet. Unsatisfactory ending also. Definetly worth watching
Dark, but darky comicBy theorganicdomino (75 reviews) , 06 Sep 2013Not perfect, but an 'entertaining' (not quite the right word for this type of film) movie. This balances violence (which is rough and repulsive but not as extreme as you may have been lead to believe), squallor, depravity and bleak stupidity of the characters with just the right amount of humour. It doesn't quite escape it's stage origins, but uses the claustrophobia of its confined settings effectively. The cast, especially Temple and McCounaughey, are outstanding and Friedkin is clearly still a director to be reckoned with. If you already thought KFC was disgusting this should put you off for life (compulsory viewing for all then really). Oh, and the ending is just plain wrong... ...for all the right reasons (I fell off my chair laughing).
Try Fargo insteadBy a customer , 04 Sep 2013A black comedy (supposedly) that mis-fires ie it's not funny. Lacks the quirky humour, dialogue and charm that someone like the Coen brothers would have introduced. All that's left is sickening and bleak. Have a look at Fargo, another bleak and bloody story, but you'll see what I mean - and enjoy a much better movie.

Better than some reviews suggestBy a customer , 02 Sep 2013Odd film, but enjoyably dark sense of humour if you can stomach the violence. Good performances; never mind KFC, it's hard to look at Matthew McCounaughey the same way again!
strangely amusing.By a customer , 31 Aug 2013Had read reviews saying how terrible it was so was interested to see. Violent, engaging and almost like a 1970s film with disinterested men attractive cheap wife, a silly sweet girl and an amoral baddie in a hick town. By no means a masterpiece but for a film to watch in the early hours without having to think or feel this is fine. Interesting premise well acted. Would see again.
