    [Highly rated reviewer]

The best film I've seen in awhile. A gangster film with a difference. It can be compared to Tarantino at his best in its structure as it concentrates on conversations between the various characters as Brad Pitt's hitman searches for the men who robbed a mob poker game and negotiates with his employers over how the job is to be done. It has some brutal violence but those scenes are isolated and the film never descends into gratuitousness. Destined to be a classic I think and highly recommended viewing from me.

It bored my teenage son so much he had to turn it off or else he'd have fallen asleep! And it looked so good in the trailer. Disappointed.

  • A failed pastiche.

Something tells me that the writer director of this film spent a lot of time in the cinema in the 90s, absorbing everything Tarentino, the Coens and Guy Ritchie did. Nothing wrong with that, but this tribute to those writers/directors doesn't work at all. The problem with the film is that there is very little to it, and the endless (and pointless) dialogues are there to fill the film out, rather than - as is the case with some of the films this one tries to mimic - to explore characters and expose elements of the plot. Apart from that; Brad Pitt is coasting, James Gandolfini is useless, Ray Liotta is quite funny but is starting to look like the ageing Tony Curtis, and the rest of the cast is forgettable. I wouldn't bother.

  • Boring me quickly.

A very bad attempt at a Tarantino style slow burner with long conversation scenes. Unfortunately this doesn't work at all, the story line is slow with no interest and the conversation pieces add nothing. This film relies on the cast to give it any credibility, but even with the big names the film can't be revived. The positives are that its well acted, but otherwise a boring story line.

Brad Pitt plays his part very well in a slow moving thriller than never seems to get out of second gear

As the heading says. Garbage. What is Pitt doing lending his name to this? Far too much dialog and arty farty camera work.
