If you are a fan of the operas of Purcell and have always wanted the chance to see a rare performance of King Arthur, this is about your only opportunity. But what a disappointment! This film is a really weird interpretation of the opera, with the full text of the Dryden play spoken in German and the music sung in English. The design concept is grunge tat with overtones of gay second world war - lots of kilts and bermuda shorts. For such dancing music, the staging is strangely static and the chorus don't seem to know the words a lot of the time. To be fair, the singing is occasionally wonderful - particular Barbara Bonney. And an aditional plus is that you can cut out all the dialogue via the menu and only watch the musical sequences.
Altogether a musical oddity - worth watching just to see how bad a production can be!
