Sleepers meets Lord of the Flies in this outstanding true storyBy sean1970 (42 reviews) , 12 Jul 2012
[Highly rated reviewer]King of devils island is based on a true story of the infamous Bastoy Boys Home correctional facility in Norway set in 1915, with the arrival of two lads one 17 year old Erling a rumoured murderer and the younger and more vunerable Olav. Erling immediately clashes with the governer, played very well by Stellan Skarsgard (Avengers Assemble, Good Will Hunting), who believes in manual labour, harsh punishment and discipline. When tragedy happens Erling encourages the rest of his comrades in a courageous and viscous rebellion.
Sometimes a little bleak but with exceptional and believable performances this movie deserves to be seen. A deserved hit in Norway and if you can get passed the subtitles you will be rewarded by the movie.

Rare. On all fronts.By Morticia Autumn (6 reviews) , 27 Oct 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]Not often do you come across a film like this. So many youths providing flawless, stellar performances. Not a single moment when the viewer becomes aware of watching a constructed event. The script is perfect. The setting and scenery superb. The passion and drama alone, aside from the truth of the story, make it absolutely worth watching. Imho, the blurb does not do the film justice, as it is about far more than merely the new arrival. It is about what he inspires in the other youths. This story does not revolve around hope or survival. This story is about individuals who come to find not only their true voice, but that they have a voice.
Can't recommend this enough.By Sprp (11 reviews) , 24 Oct 2013Really loved this, looked brilliant, beautifully shot. Great story. Highly recommend this film. The acting is excellent please don't be put off by the subtitles.
A sub-zero Tenko?By vecchi (1 review) , 07 Sep 2013Beautifully filmed, performances that are both sensitive and compelling, this is a film well worth watching. The backdrop of winter snow focuses the drama onto the relationships and tensions in this reform community. Don't be put off by the title - it sounds 'B' movie, but is a reference to the climatic scene of the rebellion.
Dark but true storyBy garethw832 (17 reviews) , 04 Sep 2013Although this film uses subtitles, it is still very watchable. It is quite a dark film with portrays the inhuman way that young men could be treated at the beginning of the last century.
Not so tough.By NunkyTed (29 reviews) , 01 Sep 2013I attended a boarding school in Grantham in the 1960s so this place in Norway didn't seem too bad to me. Their food looked more appetising, the beds - even in 'isolation' - more comfortable and their predatory master more attractive than anything we had to contend with. Mind you, our headmaster had been a prisoner of the Japanese during WW2 so that may account for a few lapses in standards. This film was therefore something of a light-hearted romp but most enjoyable all the same.
