this dvd is superb. Kingdom is a gentle drama starring Stephen Fry. He plays Solicitor Peter Kingdom, who' compassion and humility has won him huge respect in the picturesque seaside town of Market Shipborough.
he is aided by his faithful receptionist and confidante Gloria, played by Celia Imrie ( from Dinner ladies), and by young trainee solicitor Lyle Anderson, played by Karl Davies, ( who previously played Robert Sugden in Emmerdale).
Peter does his best to make testing times bearable for his clients. But Peter harbours his own sad secret - six months ago, his brother Simon died in unexplained circumstances, though his body has never been found.
As Peter seeks clues to Simon's mysterious fate, he also has his troubled younger sister Beatrice to deal with, played by Hermione Norris.
In the first episode, Peter collects his brother Simon's effects from the police station. Simon's clothes were found on the beach and it appears he went into the water and never returned.
in the second episode, A distressed young Eastern European woman accuses local farmer Jack Thriplow of stealing her baby, but there's far more to the case than first meets the eye.
in the third episode, an explosion sinks the trawler of fisherman Tom Case and his son, who narrowly escape with their lives.
in the fourth episode, The office is in chaos: Gloria hasn't turned up for work, Beatrice is plotting to win Alan back, and there's a rogue squirrel in the attic.
in the fifth episode, With Gloria off sick, Beatrice does a surprisingly good job of manning the phones, and even Snell lends a hand. Meanwhile, Lyle is helping Herb Griffiths to lease a nearby field for his prize racehorse, and the whole town has gone gambling mad.
in the sixth episode, Lyle is feeling undervalued so Peter decides to give him some more responsibility, handing him the case of an old Polish man (played by Joss Ackland) facing eviction from his home.
A fantastic series that is well worth renting out.
This is such a delightful series. It is gentle, beautifully filmed and is a good antedote to the depressing menu of murder, betrayal and infidelity we are served up most of the time. Best of all, it stars Stephen Fry.
