One of the funniest movies of the 90s
By Andy from Surrey, UK , 07 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Kingpin tells the story of a washed up bowling star (played by Woody Harrelson) who takes on a new Amish bowling prodigy (played by Randy Quaid) and tries to coach him to world series glory against his old rival (played by Bill Murray). Along the way, they pick up the battered girlfriend of a sleazy gangster and eventually end up at the world series.
There are so many stand out moments in this movie that are too numerous to mention and all the actors are on fine form, especially Bill Murray and his ridiculous hair. This is a must see if you like a good laugh. Don't be put off by the fact that the Farrelly Brothers directed it, this is their best to date.- Was this review helpful to you?

(37)Good fun, but a bit overrated
By TheWatchman (488 reviews) from Suburbia , 20 Mar 2011I dont know why, but whichever circle of friends Im in always seems to rave about Kingpin, going on about how its the most hilarious comedy film ever.
I watched it when it first came out on video in about 1997. I think I kind of forgot it completely by about 1998 (excluding listening to my friends reminisce about it in the pub). So, some thirteen years later, I decided to watch it again and see if I missed something the first time round.
Yeah, its mildly amusing, certainly better than some of todays comedies. I laughed in a few places and it kept me entertained for an hour and a half (certainly better than anything Jack Black has ever starred in). Bill Murray is excellent, especially when you consider all his lines were adlibbed. However, I still cant see myself going on about how wonderful it is when Im next in the pub.
If 3/5 stars is average, Id give it 3.5 stars, simply for being just a little bit above the rest. Ill review it again in another thirteen years time and see if I can bump up the rating to a whopping four stars.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bowled over
By NDG (172 reviews) from Oxfordshire , 20 Jul 2010Subtle...isn't the word to use. This is not art. But it's brain-in-neutral fun - and sometimes that's just what you need.- Was this review helpful to you?

Spare me..
By Azzy (22 reviews) from Benfleet , 19 May 2010Sorry for the pun..
This is a film that totally passed me by, and one of those annoying movies where people say 'You've NEVER seen Kingpin!? YOU have never seen Kingpin!?'
Turns out I never missed much.
I was thinking that I missed out on the original gross-out comedy.. but I didn't. It's not great and there are only so many rubber-hand jokes a film should make.. but why 2 and a half stars? Bill Murray. Pure and simple. His screen time makes it all worthwhile.
Worth a rent, but nowt more.
