LOVEFiLM Review Kinsey

  • 4.5 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

A thorough and insightful biopic of Alfred Kinsey, the professor whose research into human sexual behaviour brought him into fierce conflict with the conservative establishment.

I'm sorry if I don't agree with the hype, but I found this film a little over zealous. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but as soon Kinsey finds his true 'purpose in life' I feel his character changes a little too dramatic, and I get the feeling it is a case of America creating itself another all american hero.

Apart from that, it is an interesting film about an interesting man. Worth the watch.

Interesting and engaging! Both me and my flatmate were glued to the screen. I wasn't sure Liam Neeson was the best for the role (his accent!), but he does look awfully like Kinsey! His character was a little bit detached and oblivious to logical results of his actions, but maybe this is the way scientists are.

Very slow and so boring we turned it off. What a pity great actors but the storyline was not what I call entertaining.

  • Standard double standards

    Nick thinks 3. I think 3.5. I'm right because I'm typing.

Nick says: 'It was an interesting exposition of this man and his work, but not necessarily a gripping work of cinema.'

Gina says: 'I love the double standard of the studies going from the men to the women. poor corrupted ladies.'

  • Poignant and thought provoking

A serious, poignant movie - much more thought provoking than 'hot'. Liam Neeson's portrayal of a focussed scientific mind is well drawn. If you've met a few exceptional academics, you'll recognise the type. I disagree with the reviewer who said that that the performance became over zealous - it's likely that the real person did. It's believable that monomaniacal focus Kinsey had applied to studying gall wasps, teamed with a growing social conscience and his own suffocating upbringing, could have resulted in this level of drive and determination. Draw your own conclusions about the unintended consequences as well as the landmark changes which followed. The film does acknowledge the deficits in Kinsey's empirical research of matters so close to the heart.

I found this biopic on Kinsey's life work an interesting story if only because it highlights how very much attitudes to sex and the body have changed within living memory (cetainly in the US and Europe). I take for granted the knowledge and the autonomy I have had over my body in my lifetime. This film was a sharp reminder that ignorance and prejudice made many, many people very privately miserable only two generations ago. I never had much time for the Kinsey reports in recent decades; it seemed their sole purpose was to thrust sensational statistics about private choices in our faces and I couldn't see the point. Having seen, in this film, where it all started I recognise that a scientific reference point for a what is a constantly evolving 'norm' of sexual behaviour is a useful tool to moderate debate on social policy. I would have appreciated some explicit reference dates being shown through the movie.

Generally straightforward biography. Tackled the issues head on. Liam Leeson very good. Laura Linney surprisingly passive - can't see why she had an Oscar nomination for her performance.

Well made but lacks the spark to make it into a really good film.
