    Smart & colourful

A moving and interesting story of social climbing and making something of yourself despite a poor childhood. Tony is used to doing what he has to do to survive without worrying who it hurts. But when a job devastates the family of the girl he loves he is faced with the more difficult challenge of trying to put things right. The cinematography and direction is good and the movie strides ahead with a fairly swift pace. The heroine is a singer so there are quite a few smart routines in the happy go lucky phase of the movie, as things go wrong for the family the character isn't singing and dancing and this helps change the feeling of the film to a more serious and sad tone very naturally.
