Screenwriter Shane Black of Lethal Weapon fame makes his directorial debut with this film noir. Robert Downey, Jr., stars as Harry Lockhart, a petty thief in New York City who quite literally stumbles into acting and soon finds himself in Los Angeles to test for a film role as a private detective. To help Harry prepare, his new agent arranges for him to shadow a gay private investigator, Perry van Shrike also known as 'Gay Perry' (Val Kilmer). But when Perry takes Harry along on a simple job for a mystery client, the two witness the disposal of a dead body, and the game suddenly becomes serious. Adding to the intrigue is Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan), a beautiful and smart-as-a-whip wannabe starlet with whom Harry is so smitten that he pretends to be a real detective. Soon Harry, Perry, and Harmony are tangled in a life-threatening web of dead bodies, deception, and treachery.

Deliriously enjoyable.... The duo make a whole greater than the sum of their parts, a couple of highly flammable actors as famous for their volatile offscreen reputations as for their redoubtable acting chops
It's the laugh-a-minute repartee of this odd couple that drives the movie.... Kilmer revels in showing off his long-dormant talent for suave comedy
This is a welcome return to form for screenwriter turned director Shane Black! This in my opinion is his best script yet, the witty and and non-stop banter between Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr almost had me rolling in the aisle on several occasions. Can't think of a more enjoyable movie I've seen this year, both Downey Jr's(I kept thinking how this superb actor has wasted a career with so much potential) and Kilmer's comic timing are of the highest calibre, Highly Recommended!!!
Ultimately quotable lines, snappy dialogue, bizarre off the wall the scenarios all go to make up an enjoyable romp.
Downey and Klmer are excellent as crook-turned-actor and gay private eye respectively, with Downeys character narrating and throwing in some little asides to the camera that give it less of a buddy-movie edge that Black is known for (Lethal Weapon etc).
Black's script is honed and borrows from his previous work and it works well, go rent and enjoy!
Val Kilmer - who shot to fame as cocky pilot Iceman in Top Gun - is to join the cast of Columbus Day, a crime drama in which he will play a thief, it was announced today. The film, about a heist that goes wrong, will also star Wilder Valderrama as his partner in crime and is to be produced by a company co-owned by Kevin Spacey. Although Kilmer may not appear in cinemas as frequently as other actors, he has racked up a wide-ranging CV in his career, with the recent Kiss Kiss Bang Bang featuring... Read more
