Screenwriter Shane Black of Lethal Weapon fame makes his directorial debut with this film noir. Robert Downey, Jr., stars as Harry Lockhart, a petty thief in New York City who quite literally stumbles into acting and soon finds himself in Los Angeles to test for a film role as a private detective. To help Harry prepare, his new agent arranges for him to shadow a gay private investigator, Perry van Shrike also known as 'Gay Perry' (Val Kilmer). But when Perry takes Harry along on a simple job for a mystery client, the two witness the disposal of a dead body, and the game suddenly becomes serious. Adding to the intrigue is Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan), a beautiful and smart-as-a-whip wannabe starlet with whom Harry is so smitten that he pretends to be a real detective. Soon Harry, Perry, and Harmony are tangled in a life-threatening web of dead bodies, deception, and treachery.

Deliriously enjoyable.... The duo make a whole greater than the sum of their parts, a couple of highly flammable actors as famous for their volatile offscreen reputations as for their redoubtable acting chops
It's the laugh-a-minute repartee of this odd couple that drives the movie.... Kilmer revels in showing off his long-dormant talent for suave comedy
This is a welcome return to form for screenwriter turned director Shane Black! This in my opinion is his best script yet, the witty and and non-stop banter between Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr almost had me rolling in the aisle on several occasions. Can't think of a more enjoyable movie I've seen this year, both Downey Jr's(I kept thinking how this superb actor has wasted a career with so much potential) and Kilmer's comic timing are of the highest calibre, Highly Recommended!!!
This film suffers from a serious identity crisis: starts off with a lot of gimmicky voiceovers and camera trickery, which soon palls (but at least it goes away). Seems to want to be some kind of gumshoe spoof but the script doesn't stand up and the body count gets a little absurd. Suddenly halfway through you're supposed to suspend all disbelief and accept cartoonish car chases and comic book shootouts, with Naked Gun-style visual gags etc. Has the self-indulgent look of a vanity project by the leading men (Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilner)
There are two dominant strands in detective fiction: the English and the American. In the traditional English mystery story, the crime is a jigsaw puzzle that the sleuth pieces together through keen observation, forensic science, and shrewd (often subtle) cross-examination. If Agatha Christie is the queen of this kind of literature, Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation, Sherlock Holmes, remains the archetypal English detective. His American counterpart would be Philip Marlow, or perhaps his... Read more
