Effective and earthy crime drama, quite realistic and menacing for the time. The main leads, Victure Mature and Brian Donlevy give solid, understated performances........or, maybe they just seem understated next to Richard Widmark's debut film performance. He's fantastically over the top as a scary, giggling, psychopath and deservedly shot to fame on the back of the movie, stealing every scene he's in.
I remember watching thie as a youngster, and being transfixed by Widmark's psychotic hoodlum - his screen debut. Viewing it anew, I find Victor Mature's character rather unpleasant, and the cops strangely humane!
An interesting blast from the past.
