  • It may not be a famous film but it's a very good one.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I have to confess that Robert Donat can do very little wrong as far as I'm concerned. But this film is a very good one regardless of my views about the leading man.......or indeed my views about the legendary Dietrich.

Set in a turbulent period in Russia, and involving all the fun of 'That Great Game', it is well acted, well directed, very good sets and costumes, nice chemistry between Donat/Dierich, screenplay excellent,,,,,,,,,,,and , most of all, as needed with all decent films : good entertainment.

A dashing yarn of the 'old-school', a romance , a thriller, an action film......all set against an exciting backcloth.

Very good, little-known film which I recommend.

  • Great Adventure set against the Russian Revolution

I had not heard of this title despite being keen on watching old films and liking both Marlene Dietrich and Robert Donat. This is a great story within the compelling setting of the Russian Revolution. Visually there are excellent sets throughout the film and some fabulous shots, in particular where Marlene runs across the lawns of the palace in a beautiful flowing white chiffon negligee. The costumes designed for the film are impressive even down to the details on the men's uniforms and general attire. Donat and Dietrich work well together and there is obvious sincerity and chemistry between them.
