The film “Kontroll “, set exclusively in the Budapest metro’s underground system, is a strikingly dark look at the notorious metro guards and their daily struggles with their prey – the non-ticket holders

in all their mostly Magyar variety – the loonies, the raddled, ageing, handbag wielding mamas, the young fleet of foot tyros who can outrun anyone, the pimp who never buys a ticket and offers one of his young lovelies in lieu of fares, the drunks and the gays. The hero’s girlfriend to be, is first shown sitting in the carriage wearing a rabbit/bear suit. The guards are tough guys with foibles and a pallor

to understudy undertakers – they never see the light of day. Mainland Europe’s first metro system is

old and rattley with some original wooden carriages and only four lines. It works very well. A great film and wonderful if you have been there or live in that magnificent city.
