Older film-makers often mistakenly assume that teenagers are invariably desperate and obsessive about that all-important first experience. Something much closer to the truth is suggested in this Spanish coming-of-age movie, in which everything may be casual but while experiments and mistakes are made, ultimately nothing really matters. Two 16-year-old boys, Fernando Ramallo and Jordi Vilches, spend the summer in Ramallo's parents' house by the seaside, but by the end of the holiday, their sexualities have been both awakened and determined. Jordi Sánchez's play has been intelligently opened out by director Cesc Gay, who takes advantage of idyllic summer locations. The entire cast is good, but the boys, in particular, are outstanding. Rarely has a foreign language film been so accessible to British adolescents.
At last, a gay movie that's really worth watching. It tells the story of two teenage boys who share a summer together. One is intent on having one of the local girls; the other just wants his friend. His budding homosexuality isn't helped by the friend being very happy to indulge in bouts of mutual masturbation (Krampack). {Scenes which, incidentally, caused critics to walk out due to their explicit nature! I think they live a sheltered life} Confused and hurt when he's rejected for the girls, he turns to a local (and utterly gorgeous) gay writer.
A film with real insight into being a teenager on the cusp of coming out. Funny, insightful and just great fun to watch.
A gay movie that has some class, if you want a good story line and little nudity then this is for you.
