Krull is an action packed fantasy story, harkening back to the days of Errol Flynn. The story of a young king's battle against the evil beast and his army of the slayers, who are fighting to dominate the entire galaxy! They have advanced technology and powerful laser guns, and our brave human heroes merely have swords and horses, arrows against the lightning! hahaha! Although the young king is armed with a special weapon, the Glave, a magic boomerang, with blades on its sides, that is able to kill the slayers, and is the only thing that could destroy the beast, a weapon that would make Crocodile Dundee run away with his tail between his legs! The story may seem a little bit silly, but if you put aside logic, you have two and a half solid hours of fun. What also makes this movie harken back to the days of the films of Errol Flynn is the stirring score that accompanies the adventurers. There is an epic score by James Horner, who did other such great scores as Titanic, Aliens, Braveheart, Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III The Search for Spok, and let's not forget recently Avatar. Don't expect any Academy Award winning performances, but the characters are believable, and it's fun to see a young Robbie Coltrane and Liam Neeson as members of a motley crew of bandits, who accompany our hero on his quest. And for fans who enjoyed other fantasy films like Hawk the Slayer, Brian Bresslow, who was the giant in Hawk, is in this film, as the Cyclops. Also what I like is they don't show you much of the beast, but allow you to imagine him, which makes him much more terrifying. And when the Princess is held captive, she is literally in the belly of the beast. Some cynics may say this is just Star Wars but with swords and horses, but it is still an enjoyable film, and a personal favourite of mine. I remember first watching this when I was a kid, and afterwards going outside and pretending to be the main hero. I even got my grandma to make me a glave out of cardboard and tin foil, even though it didn't fly very far! Two thumbs up. Recommended for any fan of science fiction and fantasy.
