Hercules star Kevin Sorbo made the switch from television to the big screen with this impressively mounted sword and sorcery epic, based on characters created by Robert E Howard of Conan fame. Barbarian Kull becomes King of Valusia, but his attempts to free his people put him up against shape-shifting sorceress Tia Carrere. Although dealing with the classic good versus evil conventions of the genre, director John (Miami Vice) Nicolella gives the somewhat disjointed proceedings a darker hue and edgier atmosphere than normal. Sorbo, meanwhile, fits the heroic bill perfectly.
Routine sword-and-sorcery stuff that lacks any panache or visual magic.
The script/plot was originally intended to be 'Conan The Conqueror' but Arnold never reprised the Conan role.
