High energy, visually witty comedy that is close in style to Looney Tunes cartoons. Its approach is a mix of tongue in cheek and fist in the stomach, as it both parodies martial arts movies and stages some spectacular battles of its own.
...invigorating, bombastic, out-there and very funny, Kung Fu Hustle pummels The Matrix trilogy into a puddle.
Incredibly inventive, amazingly exciting, insanely entertaining.
Having been rather disappointed by Stephen Chow's 'Shaolin Soccer' my expectations for KFH were not that high, but this is a vastly superior film.
The merging of comedy and action is nothing new but few films manage to combine the two so successfully. The film is full of stunning set pieces, great slapstick and numerous homages to many different films. What cinema was made for.
After being harrassed by the boyf to watch yet another DVD he had procured from the Far East (!!) I was pleasantly surprised to find that Kung Fu Hustle was one of the best martial arts comedies I think I have ever seen - and that includes the brilliant Shaolin Soccer.
Rightly getting the plaudits it deserves and a wide cinematic release, this film will have you rooting for the reluctant hero and laughing hysterically at the imaginatively put together fight scenes and quirky characterisation.
Absolutely brilliant and a must-see in my humble opinion, for once believe the hype!
In my opinion this is the worst film I've rented so far.
I am not saying that the film is rubbish (how can it be when it has been given so many 5 stars) but don't be misled. You have to love martial arts films to love this film.
Okay, some of the fight scenes are well done and it is so bizarre that you find yourself watching just to wonder if the film really is going to improve.
Others have mentioned the comedy. Almost all the comedy is slapstick and childish, annoying slapstick at that.
This is either a 1 star or 5 star depending on what type of film you like. I cannot see any middle ground.

I laughed out loud many times during this movie, which is unusual for me! The daring conception, wonderful comic-book realisation, eccentric characters and solid comic writing gave the director (Stephen Chow, director & writer) something to really work with !
One of the best comedies I've seen in a while.

Without a doubt this is one of my favourite kung fu films ever. This film has everything for a fan of the genre, some of it is over the top (ala looney tunes) but it just works. The cinematography is slick, plotline entertaining & also very funny, this is a classic style comedy kung fu film making good use of the technology now available.
This is one of those films you just have to see. The fight scenes are amazing and get more and more over the top. It has one using a musical instrument which is incredibly beautiful.
The humor is typical hong kong silliness with tons of Western film references.
And loads of slapstick. I can say without doubt it has the best car chase I've ever seen, well the best car chase without actually using a car.
Steve chow has outdone himself, this is better than Shaolin Soccer. My mum loved this film and she hates action film and so of my mate that hates subtitled films adored this film.
This film has the perfect blend of action and comedy, and some of the best martial arts sequences I have ever seen! If you havent seen this movie yet the put it on your list now! As this is true movie gold!
I never write reviews but after seeing this way back when i have become a stephen chow evangelist ever since and been telling every one to track his stuff down.
This is great and anyone who sees it and gives it a rating of less than 6 has obviosly not been brought up right and hasnt been taught right from wrong. No arguments and thats all about it.
I like my films to be big, grand and very entertaining. Call me shallow, but that's what I like. This film is very much all of the above. It's very different from any other Kung Fu film I've seen and has elements of Tears Of The Black Tiger in it's costume and cinematography. It's pretty, imaginative, bizarrely funny and very engaging. If I had to pick holes, I would say the rather forced filling of plot gaps was a bit jarring, but at the same time you don't won't them to hang around with messy filling scenes, because the key factor that made it stand out for me was the pace. It built up the final 'fight' so much, i didn't think it could meet the expectation but it did, oh it did! Brilliant!
After the undeniable genius of Shaolin soccer, comedy superstar Stephen Chow returns to our screens as yet another reluctant hero in this jaw dropping homage to all things chop and all things socky.
Similar in style to Shaolin soccer, Chow even finds the time to mock his Worldwide hit in the opening moments, brave indeed. But then, Stephen Chow is a talented performer and backs it up with an entertaining mix of Kung fu, comedy and hi jinx.
If you didn't enjoy Shaolin soccer then it's probably best that you stop reading now, Kung fu hustle sticks to the same formula. The special effects play a big part once again and the wackiness of it all is enough to see you through a film with so much to recommend that even the biggest critics may find a soft spot for Chow's unique brand of comedy.
To be honest, i thought Shaolin soccer was the better movie. But that's not to say that Kung fu hustle isn't funny. Some of the set pieces are hilarious and i only hope that Hollywood doesn't come a calling and stampede all over this refreshing and undeniable talent.
Nice that the World caught on though.
I agree with all the reviews here for this film...it was brilliant!
I watched this in the cinema at 11.30am on a Sunday! Boy it woke me up alright. Very funny, great moves, complete escapsism and a lesson on how to do a good kung fu film.
