This sexy and original drama follows an ensemble cast of characters who represent multiple facets of the lesbian lifestyle, but enact very human dramas that anyone can relate to. At the centre is Jenny (Mia Kirshner, EXOTICA), who moves to a hip L.A. neighbourhood to be with her boyfriend, a swim coach named Tim. Immediately swept up in the lesbian community, Jenny begins to question the heterosexuality she had always taken for granted, while the lives and loves of those around her play themselves out in sometimes humorous, sometimes painful ways. In this fifth season, Jenny finds her way into the director's chair for the movie LEZ GIRLS. Meanwhile, Bette battles her jealousy over Tina's new lover, and Alice accidentally outs a male celebrity. Plus there's that pesky sex tape that rocks the film set. This collection presents all 12 episodes of the fifth series.

I came to this latest series, hoping that this long running saga of Lesbian life in L.A/North America would have 'grown up' by now!
Unfortunately I was sadly mistaken, yet again we have a group of women who live a life-style that revolves around, Hedonism without boundaries; lacking any Loyalty to partners; the Morals of alley-cats; Shopping at the drop of a hat, and all without any apparent means of earned income, except for a small number of characters!?
Yes there are some very steamy sexual encounters, however a lack of story lines and the inability to warm to any of the characters, makes for a depiction of an empty and sad life!
Avoid like the plague, unless you are a member of the Lesbian fraternity with precious little else to watch!
The L word has had a chance to do what no other series has done before - make lesbian life not just sexy, but normal. For years now, gay men have played major roles in many programs and have thus become a part of our 'every day lives'.
A lesbian on the other hand is still often portrayed as 'not the norm'.
The L word does fulfill part of this challenge. Its cast is a group of very attractive, successful X generation women. However, normal they are not. The storyline portrays a group of Y generation 20 yr old girls, rather than the 30- and 40- something women that they are.
Most of them seem to have serious pscychological issues (Jenny and Shane mentioning just two) inhibiting them from leading a happy fulfilled life. The show is just tooooo far fetched. In a group of lesbian women, you would have at least ONE couple that would be just happy and together and have normal jobs and lead a normal life. But this isn't the case. Even the ones in the show that you'd think are almost normal, lose their mind and fall in the arms of the first girl they meet.
Ok, thats enough but the actual characters. Now, the storylines. Shebar?? All the 'dramas'. Its just too much. It could have been played in to the show in such a more professional way. They could have been serious competition and shown Kit what its like to come up against this (almost like a lesbian Starbucks moving next door to the local caf). Instead, it felt like a slapstick comedy where you always knew around the corner those crazy girls from Shebar are going to cause mayhem!!
I'm stopping now. I've ranted enough. Don't get me wrong. I love the show. This is the hard bit. I just expect more. It has so many interesting characters who just don't develop at all.
Please give us more and please give us more from them.
