Brilliant Bayadere
By a customer from Preston, England , 02 Nov 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This is my desert island production of my desert island ballet! It has everything that makes a great classical ballet; dramatic plot, excellent scenery and costumes, tuneful music and, above all, great choreography. Nureyev's version of the classics are some of the best adaptations ever and he excelled himself in La Bayadere, his last great production before his untimely death. Being himself a somewhat exotic character he was the perfect person to stage this ballet of jealousy, murder, pageantry, ghosts and eternal love set in 19th century India. The plot, featuring a Brahmin, noble warrior,temple-dancer (the Bayadere), a Rajah and his daughter is a bit complicated but is explained in the dvd. Even if you don't fully understand everything that is going on you will be swept along by the colour, music and glorious dancing and choreography. The final scene in the Kingdom of Shades (the ghosts of dead bayaderes)is one of the most glorious in classical ballet and a total contrast to the colour and pageantry in the opening acts. This ballet has everything and is a must-see for anyone interested in classical ballet. It is also a great introduction for anyone who hasn't seen a lot of ballet. I dare you to dislike it!- Was this review helpful to you?

Yes, but.....
By a customer from London , 11 Jan 2009OK, this is an extremely well danced and very, very visually pretty production. BUT its the version that ends in the Kingdom of the Shades. There is no Act 3 Scene 2 in this version, so you miss out on the destruction of the temple and the ascenscion to the abode of the blessed of the souls of Solor and Nikyia, which leaves the story with no ultimate resolution Instead, the ending just fizzles out like a damp squib.- Was this review helpful to you?

Beware La Bayadere
By a customer from Kent England , 05 Aug 2005The disk that I received from Screen Select was not a performance of the ballet - very disappointing. Instead it was a comprehensive view of rehearsals and a detailed description of how Nureyev reconstructed the ballet in three weeks based on the choreography of Petipal. Either the label or the hirer is at fault here.- Was this review helpful to you?
