[Highly rated reviewer]I found this an enjoyable romp with some good tunes. The production was fun. The highlight for me was watching Harnencourt, the conductor, he even interacted with the singers who came off the stage and into the pit during one bit of the action. I agree not Offenbach's best but still worth watching.

Fun for the original audience, a bit of pain on DVDBy PaoloC (57 reviews) from Norwich , 02 Apr 2012A splendidly sung performance, undermined on DVD by the pantomime costumes and settings. These obviously worked in the Zurich opera house, but when seen cold a light hearted operetta like this needs a relatively straight-forward production and costumes to highlight the enjoyable music
Musically good, average productionBy a customer from Perth , 11 May 2010Unfortunately act 2 of this DVD wouldn't play so my review is based on acts 1 and 3.
Musically thoroughly enjoyable but there was nothing very interesting in the production. The humour in the piece was weak. The stage set was the same for acts 1 and 3 (and therefore probably also for act 2) and wasn't very inspiring either.
Video and audio quality were excellent.
Good Clean FunBy a customer from Sussex , 07 Mar 2010In some ways the most entertaining aspect of this production is watching the rightly venerated conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt directing the performance with such gusto and so obviously enjoying it. He certainly makes the music sharp and clean, which the acting isn't always, though the singing is of a high standard throughout. The opera is good fun, though not as good as his 'Orphee Aux Enfers'.
La Belle HeleneBy a customer from Shrewsbury , 12 Aug 2009Marvelous music and performance BUT it was said to be in English and this was spoilt for me by being in French. I have seen an English language performance before and so believed your review that said the language was English.
Great MusicBy a customer from Cheshire England , 12 Nov 2007I don't quite know what rate this dvd. La Belle Helene is one of my favourite operettas. I have seen the Amateur Stage Version a number of times and loved them. This is a show which can be played humourously or 'straight' I have seen both ways performed on the amateur stage 'funny' which was brtilliant and 'straight' which was, I'm afraid, was some what boring. There are more and different musical numbers in the stage version than in this professional one and although it was sung and performed really well and did have quite a bit of humour - I much prefer the amateur stage version. Nikolas Harencourt, the conductor, was a joy to watch he 'made' it for me. My main gripe is the 'costumes' I thought they were most inappropriate for ancient Greece. They looked as if they were a job lot from a pantomine - say - 'Alice in Wonderland - the mad hatter's tea party'
